Traveling Through Time and Space to Become an Unlucky NPC ,Time travel has always been a feature of romance in literature as well as in films and in the domain of imaginary physical science. What if time and space travel does not make one a hero or even someone of significance in history?
But suddenly one wakes up a non-playable character in a universe created by others, with rules and regs that are set by the creator of the game. Welcome to the life of an unlucky NPC, where at the first step you have all possibilities and at the end step you realise you’re an extra and there’s no more space for you.
The Journey Begins
The story really begins with a scientist of sorts or a traveller who wants nothing more than to go further than he has ever gone before. The traveller, equipped with the techniques that are almost as science fiction or a weapon, plays the role of a time-space traveller. It may be in an intent to observe the birth of civilizations, learn about famous events or even change the course of history.
In fact, the fabric of reality is rather unforgiving and not as friendly as one would wish for. Time and space are ocean waves, and even a little deviation from one’s course may lead to a complete failure.
When our traveller jumps from one age to another, they first observe some discrepancies, tiny ones which are almost unnoticeable and then growing into aberrations. Instead of coming out to meet the great and mighty romans, they end up in a village that’s more like a relic of the great city they’ve only heard in legends.
They are supposed to be a generation that starts exploring space at will, but they are stuck amongst humdrum typical office employees, whose biggest event of the day might be the coffee maker breaking down.
The NPC Curse
Sooner or later the traveller starts to understand that they are actors in someone else’s play. That is why they are wasted in the universe and turned into NPCs, characters without a will, without a mission, necessary for the main character of someone else’s story. They try to engage society and the end result they are either ignored or rejected. They clearly cannot alter the flow of history or the new destiny of the larger actors in their orbits. They live a monotonous life which is characterised by pointless motions and activities that are carried out every day.
It is what happens when one becomes an NPC in existence they previously wanted so much to discover, and life becomes all about enduring the sense of insignificance. The once hopeful and optimistic traveller now occupies a space that is simply alive and struggling. They are the shopkeeper whose shops have no buyers, the soldier who is waiting for a war that never happens, the observer in a busy world where people simply do not look.
The Existential Dilemma
Time passes on and suddenly that traveler, who has now became NPC, starts struggling with an existential anxiety. To be alive but at the same having no influence on the world that is around you can be defined as what? Can you find a way to escape this loop or is it the ultimate destiny of NPCs?
The traveler recalls the fables of such protagonists who in one way or the other gained their wings from the nadir and initially helped in fashioning the society. But those were stories which were penned by other people, in worlds that operated under a completely different set of regulations.
In this universe, the logic of the NPC is not the same, and it doesn’t let the NPC to rebel or run away. They are not the messiah, they are the faceless, the unknown, that will be erased and assimilated, unrecognised not only by the people on the other side of this world but even by the very cosmos which has transported them here.

Glimmer of Hope?
However, the odds are completely stacked against him and yet the traveller does not give up entirely. This is social life, it can’t be impossible to escape, there must be an opportunity to leave the set of rules of this reality. Is the solution then to get rid of NPC altogether? Perhaps the problem is not that we need to fight NPC, but that we should fully accept it and be part of it.
If the universe is perceiving them as an NPC then why not minimise the effort the universe, or Fate is using to track it? Oddly this chain of speculation might prove right, after figuring out the regulation of this existence, it is possible to bend it from within.
People start perceiving the cycles, the schedule of the environment in which they exist. Gradually, people realise that there are connections that introduce this reality. They know and it is probably a very slim chance but if they manage to move the right strings then perhaps they can rewrite their script. It won’t be the grand epic – to be more accurate, it is unlikely to be much of anything on the larger stage – but maybe it will be enough to look into that mirror and reclaim itself, to rise up and take back a slice of the universe one time and say to the darkness, I exist.
Conclusion
Going ‘space-time continuum’ to be an unlucky NPC is not the trip one imagines when they initially have their first dream of the outer world. It can be considered a tragedy, which shows what can happen when people start meddling with forces that cannot be even imagined. However, it is another tale of the arrival, of how one can see hope in the world even when they live in shit. Even in a world that you are just an extra, there’s a plot, an existence in a world that needs you. And maybe that is all that is important in life or as someone once said money can’t buy happiness but it can buy skateboards and that’s kind of the same thing.
